Preface (Предисловие)

Данный учебник подготовлен в соответствии с федеральными государственными 
образовательными стандартами и отвечает требованиям 
программы по дисциплине «Английский язык» для учреждений 
среднего профессионального образования. Учебник может 
быть использован при обучении студентов колледжей и неязыковых 
вузов, а также всеми изучающими английский язык самостоятельно.

Учебник составлен по целевому и тематическому принципу. 
Каждый раздел (Unit) включает аутентичный текст с комплексом 
упражнений на активизацию лексики в парной, групповой и индивидуальной 
работе, нацеленных на овладение и закрепление коммуникативных 
навыков в профессиональной сфере.
Основу комплекса упражнений составляют коммуникативные 
упражнения, направленные на формирование речевых умений 
студентов и обеспечивающие высокий уровень практического владения 
иностранным языком в профессиональной сфере.
Основными целями данного учебника являются:
 
– формирование иноязычной профессиональной коммуникативной 
компетентности, необходимой для общения в профессиональной 
сфере;
 
– подготовка будущих специалистов к практическому использованию 
иностранного языка в профессиональной деятельности;
 
– 
ознакомление учащихся с текстами по специальности и развитие 
навыков работы с текстами;

проектирования, конструирования судов, а также их техническое 
обслуживание.
В конце даются краткий словарь судовых терминов и таблица 
неправильных глаголов.
Каждый раздел имеет следующую структуру:
 
• ввод в тему (обсудите в парах);
 
• список лексических единиц, подлежащих усвоению, и упражнения 
на их первичное употребление в речи; задания на активизацию 
лексики (переведите следующие словосочетания на русский/
английский язык);
 
• текст с заданиями, имеющими различные цели: просмотровое 
(ответить на вопросы), поисковое (закончите предложения, выбрав 
соответствующее окончание в правой колонке), изучающее 
(найдите соответствия) чтение. Все тексты взяты из аутентичных 
английских и американских источников, адаптированы 
и носят исключительно профессионально ориентированный, 
функциональный характер;
 
• упражнения, нацеленные на формирование терминологического 
профессионального минимума;
 
• упражнения, направленные на более глубокую работу с текстом, 
на поиск англоязычных соответствий;

The art and science of seamanship have developed from the 
experience of maritime nations over many centuries. Sea travel has 
passed through the days of propulsion by oars, the discovery days of 
sail, through the advances of steam on to the age of oil, and fi nally to the 
atomic period of advanced technology. The art of mastering the means 
of transportation on water, having seen the excitement of discovering 
new worlds and the conquering of new boundaries has settled for the 
advance of trade in all directions of the compass.
The ship becomes the ideal vessel, capable of transporting cargo, 
livestock, troops, passengers gas, fl uids, minerals, etc. The ship, 
nowadays, is equipped with such ancillary equipment as required 
to load and offl  oad, in a safe condition, all cargoes, and passengers.
Seamanship and the ships themselves have created the spirit of 
adventure that turned such men as Magellan, Drake, and Nelson into 
more than legends. And today knowledge is needed to direct the seamen 
safely into good seamanlike practices.

Directions on board a ship are described by several terms that are 
peculiar to the idiom of seafarers. Assuming the ship is going ahead 
on a cruise, if one were standing in the middle part of the ship, facing 
ahead, one would be facing forward. Directly behind would be de-
scribed as astern. The right hand, from forward to a stern, is known as 
starboard; the left-hand side from forward to a stern is known as port.
The position at right angles to the ship’s fore-and-aft (forward to 
astern) line is known as abeam. Thus, on the right-hand side, this posi-
tion is known as the starboard beam, and, on the left-hand side, as the 
port beam.
The extreme front end is called the stem (or bow). The central part 
of the ship is called the amidships and between the amidships and the 
bows is the foredeck. Abaft the superstructure amidships (“superstruc-
ture” is anything erected on the main deck) is the after deck and abaft 
that, the back end of a ship is called the stern.
Most “fl oors” on board a ship are called decks, any ceilings or over-
heads are called deck-heads. The walls of the rooms, in cabins, or com-
partments, are called bulkheads.
All cargo spaces are called holds and are numbered. The hatch is 
an opening giving access to the hold. These hatches reduce the strength 
of a deck, as many cross-beams have to be left out. To restore this 
strength an upright steel wall, in the shape of a shallow box without 
a top or bottom, is put around the entry to the hold. This is called the

hatch coaming (it also helps to keep out water). The word coaming is 
used for any structure which keeps water out of an entry or opening in 
the deck. The lower hold is the bottom of any hatch with tween decks. 
The space between the ship’s outer plating and inner plating at the 
bottom makes up the double bottom space subdivided into tanks. These 
are protected by boards called a ceiling. The whole body of a ship, not 
including fi ttings, is called the hull. The hull is the actual shell of the 
ship including her superstructure.
Many modern cargo and passenger ships have a transverse propul-
sion unit or bow thrusters in the bow. Their purpose is to give greater 
maneuverability in confi ned waters, like ports, and so reduce or elimi-
nate the need for tugs. The rudder, which enables the vessel to main-
tain her course, is situated right aft. The bulbous bow can improve pas-
senger and crew comfort, as it can reduce pitching in heavy seas and 
has been provided in tankers, bulk carriers, and modern cargo liners 
to increase speed when in ballast.
