ВВЕДЕНИЕ 

По своим целям и содержанию учебник «Профессиональный англий-

ский язык в нефтегазовой отрасли» соответствует требованиям программы 
по иностранным языкам для вузов неязыковых специальностей. 

Учебник разработан в рамках компетентностного подхода к профес-

сиональной подготовке специалистов. В его основу положен профессионально-
коммуникативный 
принцип, 
предполагающий 
формирование 

у студентов универсальных и общепрофессиональных компетенций 
по направлению бакалавриата 21.03.01 «Нефтегазовое дело».  

Целью данного учебника является совершенствование умений чтения 

и перевода аутентичного иноязычного текстового материала профессионального 
содержания, а также развитие навыков устной речи информативно-
монологического и диалогического характера. Уделяется внимание 
письменной речи, что предусматривает выполнение письменных грамматических 
заданий, перевод текстов, составление планов высказывания. 

Учебник состоит из введения, шести разделов, пяти приложений, те-

матического словаря и библиографического списка. Каждый раздел посвящен 
определенной области нефтегазового дела: профессии инженера, 
нефтегазовой инженерии, истории нефтегазового бурения, современному 
состоянию нефтегазового бурения, экологическим и техническим проблемам 
нефтегазового бурения, ведущим мировым нефтяным компаниям. 
Тексты для учебника отобраны из современной оригинальной научно-
технической литературы с учетом их актуальности и познавательной ценности, 
а также уровня подготовки обучающихся. 

Каждый раздел учебника включает материал, предусматривающий 

работу над развитием навыков устной и письменной речи, повторение  
и закрепление грамматических структур, расширение активного и пассивного 
терминологического вокабуляра. Во всех разделах выдержана единая 
структура подачи материала, основанная на четкости, доступности и последовательности 
изложения содержания. Разделы включают в себя: задания 
для предварительного обсуждения изучаемой темы, основной текст  
по содержанию раздела, контрольные задания на понимание текста, диалогическое 
обсуждение темы, дополнительные тексты по изучаемой теме, 
грамматический материал и задания для его отработки, задания для разви-

тия письменной речи, задания текущего контроля. Все тексты и диалоги 
сопровождаются ссылкой на источник. Материал в пределах темы не дублируется, 
источники информации взаимосвязаны по содержанию; задания 
по грамматическому материалу основаны на содержании и специальной 
терминологии текстов. Представленные вопросы и задания для самоконтроля 
логически связаны с тематикой текущего раздела по своему содержанию, 
целевой направленности и форме выполнения. В разделе 4 
приведена иллюстрация с пояснениями структуры наземной буровой 
установки с названием ее основных составляющих частей; изображение 
сопровождается заданием творческого характера, предполагающим знание 
строения буровой установки, необходимый материал для выполнения задания 
представлен в модуле и в приложении.

To show your interest in the problem use the following:

about it; Probably there are gaps in my knowledge; If necessary I'll fill up my 
gap of  knowledge; I want to know everything possible in the field; It is neces-
sary to consider the facts. 

 

Example:
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a profession of an 
engineer? Let’s discuss the idea. On the one hand the profession 
is very promising and there are a lot of fields of activity, so you 
have a good choice and your work is always useful. But on the 
other hand there are so many technical institutes in our country 
and so many engineers as a result that their activity will not be 
probably unique.

of engineering, concerned with applying (применение, «прикладывание») sci-
entific knowledge to develop solutions for technical problems. Engineers design 
materials, structures, and systems considering the limitations imposed (навязанных) 
by practicality, regulation, safety, cost.  

Engineers are grounded in applied sciences. Their work in research and de-

velopment is distinct from the basic research focus (основной объект исследования) 
of scientists. The work of engineers forms the link between scientific 
discoveries and their subsequent applications (последующее применение) to 
human needs. Engineers are versatile minds (светлые умы) who create link 
between science, technology, and society.  

Engineers develop new technological solutions and choose the solution that 

best matches the requirements (соответствует требованиям). Their task is 
to identify, understand, and interpret the constraints (ограничения) on a design 
in order to produce a successful result. 

Engineers apply techniques of engineering analysis in testing, production, 

or maintenance (испытание, производство, эксплуатация). Analytical en-
gineers (инженеры-аналитики) may supervise production in factories, deter-
mine the causes of a process failure, test output to maintain quality. They also 
estimate the time and cost required to complete projects. Supervisory engi-
neers (главные инженеры) are responsible for major components or entire pro-
jects. Engineering analysis involves the application of scientific analytic princi-

ples and processes to reveal the properties and state of the system, device or 
mechanism. Engineering analysis proceeds by separating the engineering design 
into the mechanisms of operation or failure (действующий или неисправный 
механизм), analyzing or estimating each component of the operation or failure 
mechanism in isolation, and re-combining the components.  

Many engineers use computers to produce and analyze designs, to simulate 

(моделировать) and test how a machine, structure, or system operates.

of the major branches of engineering has numerous subdivisions (подразделений,

ing includes ceramic, metallurgical, and polymer engineering. Engineers may 
specialize in one industry, such as motor vehicles, or in one type of technology, 
such as turbines or semiconductor materials. 

Engineering is quickly developing in modern society, the profession of an 

engineer is very promising (перспективный).

Certainly. I study a lot of subjects to become competitive spe-
cialist: higher mathematics, drawing, strength of materials, for-
eign language, etc. Moreover, I want to carry on research work. 
All this is necessary for a future oil and gas engineer.

At the present moment oil and gas engineering is one of the 
most actively developing branches of industry in Russia. Does 
this field of activity suit your interests and preferences?

Student 
Yes, and my hopes are connected with graduating from the 
school, finding interesting, prestige, high-paid work and making 
a career.

Professor 
What is your major (специальность)?

Student
It is drilling. But I know a lot about petrochemical engineering
(нефтяная химия).
Drillers and petrochemical engineers are involved in many as-
pects of the oil and gas industry. But as for me, I’m a future 
driller, what about my major and my future job. I consider it’s a 
very interesting job, which will allow me to realize my abilities 
and skills, my full potential. 

Professor
Do not forget that knowledge of English has become an objec-
tive social need (бесспорная общественная необходимость) 
for millions of people.

Student 
I quite agree, an engineer must know English because it’s the 
international means (международное средство) for ex-
changing information and experience. A modern engineer can’t 
work with up-to-date equipment (современное оборудование) 
being not able to translate the manual. I’m not afraid to 
face the difficulties on my way.
