ПРЕДИСЛОВИЕ

Практикум предназначен для самостоятельной работы в ходе 
освоения курса «История и культура Великобритании». Основ-
ная цель освоения курса – расширение знаний в области куль-
турно-исторического развития, политической и общественной 
жизни Великобритании, ознакомление с историческими и куль-
турными особенностями развития страны изучаемого языка с 
учетом коннотативных связей и ассоциаций, которые они вызы-
вают у его носителей. Задания, предлагаемые в практикуме, по-
зволяют организовать самостоятельную работу при подготовке 
к семинарам в форме «перевернутый класс», когда обучающи-
еся заранее осваивают тему занятия с помощью основной учеб-
ной и дополнительной литературы, а в ходе занятия организуют 
и структурируют полученные знания в системный когнитивный 
образ изучаемых культурно-исторических явлений и процессов.
При выполнении заданий перед обучающимися и препода-
вателем также стоит задача более полного овладения англий-
ским языком, что необходимо для освоения нового материала, 
подготовки к практическим занятиям, участия в дискуссиях, 
выступлений с докладами и презентациями, написания рефе-
ративных работ и эссе.
Рекомендации для обучающихся. Для успешного освоения 
курса следует учитывать, что занятия организованы по прин-
ципу «перевернутый класс». В соответствии с этим принципом 
обучающимся рекомендуется проводить предварительную са-
мостоятельную подготовку к занятию по теме или разделу кур-
са с использованием базовых учебных пособий. Затем, в ходе 
занятия с преподавателем, прочитанный материал обсуждают 
и анализируют полученную информацию с точки зрения влия-
ния изученных событий на культурно-историческую картину 
мира носителей английского языка и их социума. Для самосто-
ятельной работы обучающихся в учебном плане предусмотрены 
специальные часы для подготовки домашних заданий и чтения 
основной и дополнительной литературы. Эффективная подготовка 
к практическому занятию подразумевает необходимость 
прочитать соответствующие разделы из рекомендованных учебных 
пособий, выписать ключевые термины и события в пред-

лагаемые таблицы, убедиться в правильности произношения 
имен и названий, найти их определения, датировку и другие характеристики. 
В соответствии с полученной информацией рекомендуется 
подготовить доклад о событиях культурно-исторической 
жизни Великобритании. В ходе подготовки и презентации 
такого доклада полученные фактические знания приобретают 
системный характер. Работа с предлагаемыми в практикуме заданиями 
способствует пониманию основных закономерностей 
исторического развития Великобритании, усвоению социальных 
норм и ценностей, социальных, этнических, конфессиональных 
и культурных различий, присущих британской культуре.

Тема 1 носит вводный характер и знакомит с особенностями 
географии и экономики страны, которые обусловливают особенности 
ее социального развития на данной территории. Задания 
этого раздела дополнены ключевой информацией, что позволяет 
эффективно включиться в процесс обучения, начиная с первого 
занятия.
Задания по темам 2–8 предполагают обязательное предварительное 
знакомство и работу с рекомендованными учебными 
пособиями и материалами, а также информацией, найденной 
в ходе самостоятельной исследовательской работы с дополнительной 
литературой. Основная задача обучающихся – развивать 
умение систематизировать новые знания, выявлять и объяснять 
логическую взаимосвязь культурных, исторических 
и социальных явлений Великобритании как ключевой страны 
английского языка.
Рекомендации для преподавателей. Задания, приведенные 
в практикуме, способствуют совершенствованию навыков обучающихся 
усваивать и интерпретировать базовые культурно-
исторические характеристики страны изучаемого языка, осуществлять 
обмен информацией на английском языке, решать 
задачи исследовательского взаимодействия, работать индивидуально 
и в качестве члена команды при подготовке докладов 
по темам практических занятий.
Задача преподавателя, проводящего практические занятия 
в формате «перевернутый класс», заключается в том, чтобы 
научить анализировать фактическую информацию, выявлять 

этапы и закономерности исторического развития Великобритании, 
понимать и учитывать в процессе профессиональной 
коммуникации культурные, социальные, этнические, конфессиональные 
различия.
Преподаватель дает предварительные рекомендации по поиску 
и изучению учебной и научной литературы в соответствии 
с темами практических занятий, что необходимо для организации 
самостоятельной работы обучающихся при подготовке 
к занятиям по схеме «перевернутый класс». Выполнение заданий 
способствует выработке умения представлять собранную 
и обработанную информацию в виде доклада, а затем и реферата, 
критически оценивать работу однокурсников.

The course History and Culture of Great Britain consists of

discussions and starting new topics. All the parts presented in 
the following table involve particular forms of preparation and

Course Books and Textbooks

There are three basic textbooks recommended for preparatory 
reading before the practical lessons. You can find these books of 
any year of publication accessible to you personally, be it on pa-
per or any other legal media.
1. McDowell D. An Illustrated History of Britain. Longman, 
Pearson.
2. Минченков А.Г. Glimpses of Britain.
3. Голицынский Ю.Б. Great Britain. Великобритания: пособие по страноведению.
In these books you can get all the fundamental information 
required for the course. NOTE! If you have difficulties reading 
McDowell D., An Illustrated History of Britain, you can consult 
the Голицынский Ю.Б. Great Britain. Великобритания for Eng-
lish – Russian thematic glossary, the pronunciation of personal 
and geographic names, lists of historical dates and personalities. 
For more concise characteristics of historical epochs and contem-
porary situation, as well as preparation for reports, address the 
Glimpses of Britain textbook. For extended reading and research 
for reports and course essays you can also find the list of books 
for extra reading in Appendices section.

Study Tips

The course is organized in the form of a flipped classroom. 
A flipped classroom is a teaching strategy of blended learning 
that implies a reverse form presenting information for studies 
before the class or outside the classroom. In flipped class sessions 
students carry out research work during self-study at home. This 
means that the focus of the lesson is not the teacher, who intro-
duces new information, but the students, who need guidance and 
instruction for successful structuring and organization of the 
received information. The teacher gives feedback on the form 
and meaning of the presented student research and is focused on 
explanation of systematic connections between individual facts. 
The teacher moderates the conversation according to the topic of 
the class, which was introduced earlier outside the classroom.
Students are earnestly recommended to have a regular note-
book and fix the course routines, take systematic notes during 
self-studies and practical classes, while reading textbooks and do-
ing library research work. This book gives lesson-by-lesson chart 
models for preparatory notetaking in the following thematic sec-
tions (1–8). The course participants are supposed to download the 
results of their self-study and in-class notetaking into the course 
LMS (learning management system) for current control and score 
rating points.

Note-taking

Note-taking helps to prepare before the classroom and review 
key concepts after it. The tasks in this handout are organized to 
develop the note-taking skills, which vary from before class notes 
to in-class notes and after class revision. The note-taking exercis-
es will help to actively participate in the class discussion and not 
to lose the general outline of the topic. Traditional notetaking in 
the form of outline recording is helpful in developing written and 
vocabulary skills, while the exercises in this student book help to 
organize the information in the form of a scheme with elements 
and interconnections, typically, chronological, for better system-
atisation of information.

Flipped Classroom: 
How to Get Ready BEFORE the Class

1. Find the chapters and sections which refer to the class top-
ic in the recommended textbooks.
2. Read about the topics of the next discussion and write out 
the key terms, events, dates, actions, etc., according to the out-
line chart given in the student’s book.
3. Practice short retelling of the discussed events using the 
chart as a plan of your speech. Make self-observations on the nec-
essary time and information provision. Analyze if you can con-
sistently retell the relative information using your notes. Make 
changes or additions if necessary.
4. In case you need more information, find relative detailed 
additions in the recommended textbooks. In case you go beyond 
time-limits, check if all the details are relevant to the general 
outline of the topic.
5. Pay specific attention to pronunciation of names and dates 
as well as new vocabulary, relevant to history and culture studies. 
Language issues may lead to overlapping time-limits and misun-
derstanding during the class discussion.

Work In Class

1. Take notes! Mark your notes for in-class meetings with the 
date of the lesson and the general theme of the discussion.
2. Answer the teacher’s questions or present the general out-
line of the studied topic in the form of a report. Specify some 
details, which influenced the course of the historic and cultural 
events. Compare different answers, discuss differences if there 
are any.
3. Make notes with basic topical information: dates, locations, 
participants, names. Use the relative charts to classes 1–8 in this 
book.
4. Use you notes during the class discussion section, add ex-
tras and note down comments in your notebook.

Preparing a Report

For some classes you can choose to prepare a report, which ex-
plores in more detail some aspects of the discussed topic. Reports 
may be about outstanding events and people or present an ana-
lytical overview of some chain of events that led to meaningful 
historical and cultural results. For example, the influence of re-
ligious contradictions on the British political life in the XVII and 
XVIII centuries; emerging social support as an effort to fight pov-
erty during the rule of Queen Victoria, etc.
Thus, after reading the basic information in the course text-
books you need to find extra information on the chosen topic. 
Consult the list of books for extra reading (Appendix 3) and-or 
search the library for relative reading. Usually, you do not need 
more than two extra sources for this type of homework in addi-
tion to your basic textbooks.
The information that you need for a report includes the fol-
lowing format sections.
1. Introduction. Why? Answer why the chosen topic is im-
portant for discussion within the course of UK studies.
2. Main part. What? Speak about the general situation and 
specify the important details that influence the historical and 
cultural development of the country.
3. Conclusion. What for? Describe your critical view of the dis-
cussed phenomenon after the researched study of its aspects and 
details.
4. Reference literature list. The standard requirement is to ac-
knowledge the sources of information that you have used for your 
report. Be sure to arrange the titles of your sources according to 
international referencing standards (see examples in Appendix 4).

Reference Format

The chosen university referencing standard in this course is 
APA style.
Mind the strict order in presenting the reference details, that is:
1) surname, 2) name initials, 3) year of publication, 4) book 
title, 5) place of publication.
