USE THE RIGHT WORD IN THE RIGHT PLACE THIS/THESE and THAT/THOSE this/these that/those 1. People and things close to the speaker in time and space. 1. People and things more distant from the speaker in time and space. 2. Situations and experiences which are going on or are about to start. 2. Situations and experiences which have just finished or are more distant in the past. 3. Interest, positive attitude. 3. Dislike, critical attitude. 4. Identifying yourself on the phone. 4. Asking about the hearer’s identity on the phone. Note: remember the set phrases: that’s it, that’s that and that’s all, which mean that something is finished or has come to an end. Ex. 1.
