TASK 2. READ THE TEXT: 
There are two routes to a career in technology in the UK: technical college and university. College courses are available for every aspect of technology. These lead to vocational qualifications at certificate and diploma 
level. Students enter from school at sixteen or eighteen with school - leaving 
certificates but work experience may also be taken into account. Students 
completing a college course can enter employment or, if their grades are 
good enough, move on to higher education. College courses may take a year 
for a certificate and two years for a diploma, and are usually modular. Universities offer both broad-based and specialist degrees in engineering, such 
as Power and High-voltage engineering. Most degrees take three years to 
complete, but some take up to five years because they include periods of 
work experience.  

Studying technology at University 
Helen is a second-year student of Electronic engineering at university. 
She decided to study at university because she wants the best choice of 
career and because she is interested in doing research in digital communications in particular. Helen̕s course is broad-based to start, but she can 
specialize in digital communications later. Engineering can be studied in 
combination with other subjects. Helen is taking German because she 
wants to spend six months in a German telecommunications company. 
There is a wide career choice for graduate Engineers in design, production 
and other fields. They may also work in marketing or become managers. 
Helen hopes to work as a Research Engineer, finding new and better ways 
of doing things.  

Studying at a Technical college 
Sam is a first-year student at a technical college. He chose to study full 
time because he wanted to get a qualification before he started to work. 
Courses combine applied science, practical skills and technical know-how. 
Courses also include Communication skills to help students deal with communication at work or with the public. When he graduates, Sam can start 
work as a Technician or go on to further study at the university.

GRAMMAR FOCUS 

The passive 
Academic texts typically contain a mixture of active and passive verb forms. 
You can decide to use the passive for a number of reasons, including: 
1. To keep the focus on the action, idea, object or event being described rather 
than who or what carries it out: 
2. The mixture is inoculated with a starter culture… 
To avoid saying who did the action because it is unnecessary, obvious, or unimportant: 
The mixture is filtered or racked to extract the sauce… 
 

The Present and the Past Simple are often used in academic writing: 

Present Simple 
active: clean(s)/see(s)   Somebody cleans the room every day. 
passive: am/is/are cleaned/seen  The room is cleaned every day. 

Past Simple 
active: cleaned/saw  Somebody cleaned the room yesterday. 
passive: was/were  cleaned/seen   The room was cleaned yesterday. 
 
TASK  10. REWRITE THE SENTENCES USING THE VERB 
PHRASES IN ITALICS IN THE PASSIVE:

Compound adjectives 
Study examples from the text: full-time, broad-based, school-leaving. 
A compound adjective is an adjective that includes more than one word. We 
put a hyphen two or more words when we want them to act as a single idea: remote-controlled (с дистанционным управлением), low-paid (низкооплачиваемый).

A Bachelor of Science degree (or a BS for short) is a degree awarded at 
universities around the world for completion of graduate-level study in a 
science- or technology-related fields. The variety of different Bachelor of 
Science programs at NSTU is overwhelming. NSTU has been awarding 
Master of Science degrees since 1996 and nowadays it offers Bachelor’s 
programs in more than a hundred fields of study. 
The Degree in Materials Engineering aims to train high-quality graduates showing technical and professional leadership as well as the adaptability required in a society in constant change. 
This degree also provides knowledge in the composite materials and
