От авторов

Данная работа адресована тем, кто изучает английский язык
и хочет более детально познакомиться с темой Money.
Структурно она состоит из четырех разделов: Introduction,
Vocabulary, Practice Part, Supplement.
Practice Part

What is Money

What is Money? Is Money the Most Essential Part
of our Life?

Some people think that money is such an emotionally loaded
topic that few people discuss it directly. Nevertheless, whether
it’s the start of the day or the end of the day we all talk about
money because money is very important in our everyday life. In
fact, it is one of the most popular topics. According to Corpus of
Contemporary American English (COCA) the word money is among
the Most frequently used words in English (223rd place in the list of
most frequent 5000 words) alongside with grammar words such as
articles, prepositions, pronouns, numerals, etc. Such high frequency
of the word “money” is conditioned by the importance of the topic
MONEY itself. Actually, not only we talk about money, but money
itself also talks. In fact, Money is the top polyglot — it talks all
languages.

A few words about money and how it came
into our life

Money is used for buying and selling goods, for measuring
value and for storing wealth. Almost every society now has a
money economy based on coins and paper notes of one kind
or another. However, this has not always been true. In primitive

societies a system of barter was used. Barter was a system of
direct exchange of goods. Somebody could exchange a sheep, for
example, for anything in the market place that they considered
to be of equal value. Barter, however was a very unsatisfactory
(impractical) system because people’s precise needs seldom
coincided. People needed a more practical system of exchange
and various money systems developed based on goods, which the
members of a society recognized as having value. Cattle, grain,
teeth, shells, feathers, skulls, salt, elephants’ tusks and tobacco
have all been used. Precious metals gradually took over because,
when made into coins they were portable, durable, recognizable
and devisable into larger and smaller units of value.
A coin is a piece of metal, usually disc-shaped, which bears
lettering, designs or numbers showing its value. Until the
eighteenth and nineteenth centuries coins were given monetary
worth based on the exact amount of metal contained in them,
but most modern coins are based on face value, the value that the
governments choose to give them, irrespective of the actual metal
content. Coins have been made of gold (Au), silver (Ag), copper
(Cu), aluminum (Al), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), plastic
and in China even from pressed tea leaves. Most governments
now issue paper money in the form of notes, which are really
“promises to pay”. Paper money is obviously easier to handle and
much more convenient in the modern world. Checks, traveler’s
checks, credit cards, debit cards and other items are being used
all over the world now and it is possible to imagine a world where
“money” in the form of coins and paper currency will no longer be
used.
That’s a short overview of the history of money. Say if you agree
with the concluding sentence of the text? Can further progress in
looking for more convenient and proper form of “money” help
create a new form which would be easier to handle and better
protected from stealing and being forged? What form could it be, do
you think?

(The word “currency” according to Merriam Webster’s
Dictionary comes from Middle English word “curraunt” which
means “in circulation” which originated from Old French “corant”,
“currant” meaning “to run” which in its turn goes back to Latin
“courrere” meaning “to hurry”. There is also another opinion.
American historian Jordan Maxwell says that the word currency is
derived from the words “currant” and “sea”, the banks control the
fl ow of money as the river banks control the fl ow of the river current
to the sea.)

The Symbols of Major currencies

£ — symbol of pound sterling, UK, since the XVI century.
The symbol is a combination of two elements: a Latin letter
L (libra = pound) and one or two horizontal bars.
Thus, the sign is simply a capital letter L, written in an oldfashioned handwriting style, with one or two crossbars to show that
it is being used as a symbol or abbreviation. The L stands for the
Latin word libra — the name of a Roman unit of weight, which also
gave rise to the abbreviation lb for a pound as a measure of weight,
and to the French word livre.

$ — symbol of dollar, USA and some other countries since the
XVIII century.
(First a few words about the word “dollar”, which is much older
than the American unit of currency and which has its own history.
