calculated in the theta (4–7 Hz), alpha (7–13 Hz), beta1(13–20 Hz) and beta2 (20–32 Hz) EEG frequency ranges. The data were processed using «Statistica v. 6» software. Intergroup differences were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney test. RESULTS Comparison of the spectral parameters of the baseline EEG in the two groups showed that subjects with a high results of the cognitive tests were characterized by a significantly higher power of the EEG alpha rhythm in the right (p=0.021) and left (p=0.014) parietal, right (p=0.025) and left (p = 0.018) central, right (p = 0.030) and left (p = 0.012) frontal cortical areas. In addition, these subjects exhibited a higher power of the EEG beta1 rhythm in the left occipital (p=0.035), parietal (p=0.003), central (p=0.012), frontal (p=0.023) areas and the beta2 rhythm in the left parietal (p=0.034) and central (p= 0.05) areas, as well as of the EEG theta rhythm in the left occipital (p=0.021) and parietal (p=0.034) cortical areas. Subjects with a high results of the cognitive tests showed lower right-sided intrahemisphere coherence of EEG theta range potentials (significantly between leads P4-O2, p = 0.031; F4- C4, p = 0.024; T4F4, p= 0.05) than subjects with a poor performance in the tests. Considering previous results from analysis of the dynamics of the EEG alpha rhythm spatial organization [2], the present studies showed that higher power of the baseline EEG alpha rhythm is one of the factors that determine the dynamic character of EEG coherence. The high initial values of spectral power of the beta1, beta2 and theta ranges in the left cortical areas were the physiological prerequisites of the high results of tests requiring logical thinking. It is conceivable that a higher power of the EEG beta and theta rhythms in the left cortical areas reflects the specific role of the left hemisphere in the verbal-logical thinking processes.
