ПРЕДИСЛОВИЕ

Курс «История и культура США» предполагает углубленное знакомство с историей и культурой США как страны, оказывающей значительное влияние на современное состояние, 
развитие, концептуальное наполнение англоязычной картины 
мира. Практика преподавания дисциплины на втором году обучения в рамках данного курса показала, что для совершенствования навыков чтения учебной и научной литературы на 
иностранном (английском) языке и подготовки самостоятельных работ требуется систематизированный набор практических упражнений, которые позволяют развивать аналитический подход к чтению, самостоятельному поиску информации, 
умение организовывать найденный материал в соответствии 
с профессиональными и научными требованиями. Практикум 
содержит базовый опорный материал, позволяющий сформировать, систематизировать и закрепить результаты самостоятельной работы в ходе освоения учебных материалов курса, 
необходимых для дальнейшего освоения дисциплин в области лингвистики, педагогики и переводоведения. В ходе выполнения заданий практикума обучающиеся совершенствуют 
навыки владения английским языком для дальнейшего применения в учебной, общей социальной и профессиональной деятельности.
Рекомендации для обучающихся. Цель освоения курса «История и культура США» – формирование и расширение запаса 
знаний в области культурно­исторического развития, политической и общественной жизни страны изучаемого языка, закрепление историко­культурных понятий и страноведческой 
лексики с учетом ассоциаций, которые они вызывают у носителей языка. Для этого необходимо на регулярной основе знакомиться с процессом развития истории и культуры страны 
с использованием учебных пособий, разработанных в рамках 
данного курса. Ознакомление с учебной и справочной литературой позволяет обеспечить фоновые знания, достаточные как 
для эффективного профессионального общения с носителями 
изучаемого языка, так и для применения в дальнейшей учебной и профессиональной деятельности.

В процессе выполнения практических заданий обучающиеся 
с первых шагов учатся выявлять проблемные вопросы и закономерности социального, исторического и культурного взаимодействия с носителями языка в целях их дальнейшего углубленного 
исследования. Для достижения этих целей в каждое практическое задание включен следующий материал:
1) методические указания к подготовке и организации работы, общие теоретические положения курса, рекомендации 
для подготовки индивидуальных устных и письменных работ;
2) вопросы и задания для усвоения, закрепления и обсуждения содержания лекционного материала в ходе практических 
занятий.
Темы практических занятий основываются на общей информации о стране с точки зрения влияния ее географического 
положения на экономику. Далее обсуждается государственное 
и административное устройство США и исторический процесс 
его формирования, что в свою очередь дает возможность рассматривать особенности социокультурной жизни страны. Работа с предлагаемыми темами и выполнение заданий позволяют выработать навыки критического анализа, систематизации 
и обмена информацией, индивидуальной работы и коллективного взаимодействия при подготовке заданий по разделам 
темы, результаты выполнения которых используются на последующих практических занятиях.
Перед выполнением заданий по темам лекций и семинаров 
необходимо ознакомиться с рекомендациями по оформлению 
заданий, которые позволят не только эффективно организовать 
новые знания для того, чтобы облегчить процесс их запоминания, но и быстро извлечь необходимую информацию в ходе 
практической работы на занятиях.
Рекомендации для преподавателей. Практикум предназначен для самостоятельной и аудиторной работы в ходе изучения 
данного курса по методу «перевернутый класс», когда обучающиеся заранее изучают тему, которая будет обсуждаться на 
практическом занятии. В практикуме предлагается примерный 
план занятий в условиях обучения по индивидуальным траекториям, в соответствии с которым требуются согласованные и единообразные действия преподавателей дисциплины для формиро

вания общей базы знаний у всех обучающихся по данному курсу, 
поскольку они будут использовать полученные навыки в дальнейшей научно­практической работе. В связи с этим преподавателю рекомендуется акцентировать внимание обучающихся 
на предлагаемой в практикуме форме организации учебных материалов (учебников, тетрадей для конспектирования) и стимулировать применение стандартных процедур научного оформления получаемых знаний, например ссылочного аппарата. Перед 
преподавателем стоит задача научить анализировать основные 
этапы и закономерности исторического развития США; рационально воспринимать социальные, этнические, конфессиональные и культурные особенности этой страны; осуществлять поиск 
литературы по теме практического занятия с применением надежных источников информации; представлять собранную и обработанную информацию в виде докладов, рефератов и критически оценивать результаты работы однокурсников.

Course Books and Textbooks

There are two basic textbooks recommended for preparatory 
reading before the practical lessons. You can find these books of 

any year of publication accessible to you personally, be it on paper or any other legal media.
1. O’Callaghan, D.B. An Illustrated History of the U.S.A.
2. Голицынский, Ю.Б. Соединенные Штаты Америки: 
пособие по страноведению.
In these two books you can get all the necessary fundamental 
information required during the course. Note that if you have difficulties reading O’Callaghan, D.B. An Illustrated History of the 
U.S.A., you can consult the Голицынский, Ю.Б. Соединенные 
Штаты Америки for English – Russian thematic glossary, the 
pronunciation of personal and geographic names, lists of historical dates and personalia.
For extended reading and research for reports and course essays you can also find the US History and Culture Reading List 
(see Contents).

Study Tips

The work of the course consists of 2 parts: self­studies (individual reading and preparation for the following classroom meeting) and classroom discussions. The process when the homework 
is prepared before the class meeting is called flipped classroom. 
It is the opposite to the conventional after­class homework and 
is used to avoid the teacher’s direct lecturing for sake of the enhancement of student participation and discussion during the 
group meeting. During the flipped classroom work the students 
are expected to have read the basic information about the topic of 
the lesson to answer the discussion questions and practice their 
critical thinking and analytical skills.
It is earnestly recommended to have a regular notebook for 
the course routines and take systematic notes during self­studies 
and practical classes, as well as while reading textbooks and doing library research work. This book gives lesson­by­lesson chart 
models for preparatory notetaking in the following thematic sections (1–8).
Students are supposed to download the results of their selfstudy and in­class notetaking into the course LMS (learning management system) for current control and score rating points.

Before the class preparation algorithm
1. Consult the plan in Table 1 for the number and topic of the 
upcoming lesson.
2. Find and read the relative information in the course textbooks. Write out the pages for reading.
3. Make notes with basic topical information: dates, locations, participants, names.
4. Analyze if you can consistently retell the relative information using your notes. Make changes or additions if necessary.
5. Mark your notes for in­class meetings with the date of the 
lesson and the general theme of the discussion.
6. Use you notes during the class discussion section, add extras and note down comments in your notebook.

Preparing a Report

For some classes you can prepare a report, which explores 
in more detail some aspects of the discussed topic. Reports may 
refer to outstanding events and people or present an analytical 
overview of some chain of events that led to meaningful historical and cultural results. For example, the European philosophy 
influence on the Constitution and governmental organization of 
the USA; the poor living conditions of African slaves became the 
origin of American jazz and blues music, etc.
Thus, after reading the basic information in the course textbooks you may need to find extra information on the chosen 
topic. Consult the list of books for extra reading in the US His-
tory and Culture Reading List (see Contents) and­or search the 
library for relative reading. Usually, you do not need more than 
2 sources for this type of homework, that is the textbook plus one 
extra source.
The information that you need for a report includes the following format sections.
1. Introduction. Why? Answer why the chosen topic is important for discussion within the course of US studies.
2. Main part. What? Speak about the general situation and 
specify the important details that influence the historical and 
cultural development of the country.

3. Conclusion. What for? Describe your critical view of the 
discussed phenomenon after the researched study of its aspects 
and details.
4. Reference literature list. The standard requirement is to 
acknowledge the sources of information that you have used for 
your report. Be sure to arrange the titles of your sources according to international referencing standards.

Reference Format

The chosen referencing standard in this course is APA style.
Mind the strict order in presenting the reference details, that is:
1) surname, 2) name initials, 3) year of publication, 4) book 
title, 5) place of publication.

For journal articles it is necessary to specify the pages where 
the article can be found.

How to make a winning report
After you have read about the chosen topic, organize the received information in writing as you will need to download the 
results of your studies to the course management platform for 
check and record.
1. Write the report yourself! Do not use the copy­paste function as original sentences may be irrelevant to your personal necessities. Typically reference books use complex formal style as 
they are intended for silent (mute) reading and self­studies. Your 

task is different and implies the oral delivery of the information 
to the audience. Thus, you need to make stylistic changes to the 
material you have. Explore the advantages of the indirect quotation method. Try to use direct subject­predicate­object constructions and grammatically simple sentences, shifting your focus to 
new vocabulary spelling, pronunciation, and usage.
2. Think about the audience! Make sure, that your sentences 
can be easily understood by the listeners; that the listeners will 
recognize the logic of your narration (introduction, main part, 
conclusion). Read the text of the report aloud and check if you 
can pronounce everything correctly, with the right intonation, 
without unnecessary pauses for reflections about the meaning. 
Set up a timer, note down the time you need to deliver the report. 
Regularly you need to fit into 5 minutes to present the topic and 
leave time for comments and discussion.
3. Think twice! In case you exceed the 5 minutes limit, consider the following changes:
– shorter sentences: facts matter, avoid personal comments in 
the report; mind the grammar and check for the correct affirmative sentence word order (subject-predicate-object);
– pronunciation and intonation: complex sentences and new vocabulary may require some time to deliver, practice them in advance;
– years are pronounced as follows: 16–64 = sixteen sixty four; 
18–00 = eighteen hundred; 20–12 = two thousand and twelve, or 
twenty twelve.
– use handouts / video­presentations instead of longer descriptions; use charts and tables to illustrate your explanations.

Course Essay Preparation

The next stage of course practice is to prepare an extended 
course essay on some chosen topic of US history and­or culture. 
This can be the continuation of you note­taking and reporting 
practices, as well as a new research. In any case, you will need the 
same referencing skills for the course essay preparation.
The essential parts of the course essay are the same as in a report: introduction, main part, conclusion, although they are organized into a more formal structure.
