PART I. THEORETICAL LEAD-IN: PEDAGOGY AND COMMUNICATION Unit 1. Professional communication: the basic Professional communication refers to the oral, written, visual, and digital forms of delivering information in the context of a workplace. “Competent communication skills are vital to all profes- sional careers because all careers, to different degrees, involve com- munication in one form or another.” Verbal Communication “Effective professional verbal communication includes the ability to speak fluently, to be” concise “yet thorough, to” project “confi- dence and to communicate in a manner appropriate for the occasion. An essential component of effective verbal communication is the ability to listen to comments from those you are communicating and to observe their reactions. Verbal communicating is categorized into interpersonal communication and public speaking.” Public Speaking Another form of verbal professional communication is public speaking or making a formal presentation to a group of people. To be an effective public speaker, a professional must be prepared to communicate with a particular group of persons, thus preparing the speech to fit the audience. A professionally delivered speech is well organized and thought out, convinces the listener you know what you are talking about and do not read from a script. Written Communication Professionals who excel at written communication understand how to use language to get their message across. They are efficient at utilizing all forms of grammar and punctuation to add in-depth meaning to their writing. There are a variety of types of written communication including writing: letters, memos, project plans, policies and procedures, articles for general audiences, technical scientific reports, studies and articles, marketing flyers, posters,
magazines and many more. Each of these types of professional writ- ten communications requires different technical and literary skills. Digital Communication Digital communication is evolving rapidly; it requires serious effort by professionals to keep up with the opportunities and how to use them effectively in their professions. Social networking, emailing, blogging, texting, internet conferencing and research and teleconferencing are all forms of communication that effec- tive professionals must understand and master, to whatever degree is appropriate to communicate in their professional careers. Digital communication is the way of the future. Every professional must learn which types of digital communication is the most effective for him.» [39] (https://careertrend.com) 1. Unit 2. Pedagogical communication Pedagogical communication is a multifaceted, professional com- munication of teachers in the learning process with students, in- cluding the development and establishment of communications, in- teraction and mutual understanding between teachers and students. The effectiveness of pedagogical communication directly depends on the degree of satisfaction experienced by each of the participants in the implementation of actual needs. Factors affecting the devel- opment of the student’s personality are the styles of pedagogical communication. Throughout the last century, traditional teaching methods have undergone significant changes; brought on by social, cultural and technological developments. In the contemporary classroom, five distinct teaching styles have emerged as the primary strategies adopted by modern teachers: The Authority Style, The Delegator Style, The Facilitator Style, The Demonstrator Style and The Hy- brid Style. The Authority Style The authority style is primarily used in a lecture or auditorium setting, whereby the teacher will give a lengthy, one-way discussion on a pre-assigned topic whilst students take notes and memorize key pieces of information. Though popular in higher-education when
there is a large group of students present, the authority or lecture style is less common in the standard classroom setting. This is be- cause the strategy offers little to no student participation, making it impossible to meet the needs of each individual pupil. The Delegator Style For subjects that necessitate group work, peer feedback or lab- based learning, a delegator or group style of tutoring is often ad- opted. As a delegator, the teacher may take an observer role to pro- mote collaboration and encourage peer-to-peer learning. Despite becoming increasingly popular, some critics consider the delegation or group style to be a poor teaching strategy given that it removes the teacher from a position of authority. The Facilitator Style Teachers who adopt a facilitator or activity-based style encour- age self-learning in the classroom through increased peer to teacher learning. Unlike the lecture style, teachers ask students to question rather than simply have the answer given to them. In this style, activities are used to promote self-discovery and develop problem- solving skills, which can often lead to the student developing a much deeper understanding of the topic. There are however, down- sides to this technique: as the facilitator, teachers must actively interact with individual pupils, which can be difficult in a large classroom setting, so the design layout of the room should be deeply considered. The Demonstrator Style Like the lecture or authority style of teaching, the demonstra- tor retains authority in the classroom. However, instead of relying solely on a verbal lecture, the demonstrator style combines lectures with other teaching forms, including multimedia presentations, demonstrations and class activities. This style is particularly well suited to music, art and physical education subjects, where demon- strations are required to fully understand a topic. In other areas of study however, the demonstrator style may not be suitable. Like the authority style, there is little direct teacher to pupil interac- tion, so it can be difficult to accommodate the needs of all students. The Hybrid Style Some teachers adopt an integrated teaching style that incorpo- rates their personality, preferences and interests into their teach- ing. This strategy is known as the hybrid style, and is popular in subjects like English, Science and Religious Studies. Teachers who use the hybrid style are able to tailor their tutoring for differ-
ent pupils, incorporating extra-curricular knowledge to develop a deeper knowledge of a particular topic. However, some critics claim that the hybrid style can weaken the learning process, as teachers try to be all things to all students. How Effective Are These Five Teaching Styles? Knowing how to engage pupils in the learning process across a broad range of top- ics is important in developing an effective teaching style in the classroom. To ensure pupils receive the learning that works for them, it’s important for teachers to experiment with different styles, and challenge themselves to find a strategy that will reach each and every one of their pupils. » [14; 15; 16] (Abridged from the original texts provided by https://en.sodiummedia.com; http://en.housepsych.com) 1.
