PART 1

LESSON 1

TYPES OF HOLIDAY

1. Read the text and choose the right answers to the questions:
1) What does the word “holiday” mean here?
a) A business travel
b) A fest
c) A break from work
d) A period of recreation

2) What is the main criterion for holiday?
a) Tourists’ age
b) The aim of holiday
c) Value for money

c) Adventure holiday
d) Ecotourism

4) Which of these activities can’t be added to the list of types of

holidays?

a) Scuba – diving
b) Shopping
c) Hunting
d) Recreation

Holiday is an extended period of recreation, especially spent away

from home or travelling. A break from work or a day of festivity or recreation when no work is done is also called the same way.

This means that holiday is a kind of tourist activity that is not con
nected with work or business. Therefore, to make out which types of tourist
activity refer to holiday one should exclude all kinds of business travelling
and then it’s quite possible to compose a list of types of holiday according
to different criteria.

Such criteria might be duration of holiday, its geography, tourists’

mobility, their age, transportation, seasons, value for money, etc.

But the main criterion is the aim of holiday. Different people take

holidays on various purposes. Some go hunting, others prefer to climb
mountains. A lot of people have holidays relative to sport activities, such as
hiking, cycling, horse-back riding, rowing and canoeing, as well as scubadiving or even bungee jumping. There are also such purposes as recreation,
treatment and medical care. In this case people can choose resort or a spa.
Tourism for recreation is very popular in our region. The local nature is
perfectly suitable not only for treatment but also for various kinds of adventure holiday. Today a great attention is paid to ecological tourism and
Krasnodar territory is the very place to develop it in.

I think shop-tourism and business travelling cannot be added to the

list of types of holiday, for they are related to work.

No less important criterion in this classification is how a holiday can

be organized. It may be done with the help of some travel agencies, tour
operator companies, or one can organise his rest himself, that is, selfcatering type of holiday takes place here.

One of the tourist activities is studying. I’m not sure if it is a type of

holiday, but one should not forget that for some people studying is more
recreating and relaxing than for example hunting or climbing mountains.

Nowadays there are many kinds of work and each of them requires its

own type of holiday. So the number of types of holiday is steadily growing.

c) admit

HISTORY OF TOURISM

Tourism is defined as the act of travel with the intentions of recrea
tional pleasure. The World Tourism Organization defines a tourist is someone who travels at least 50 miles or 80 kilometers away from their home,
for the purpose of entertainment and pleasure.

The terms tourist and tourism were first recognized in 1937 by the

League of Nations, whose definition involved a person who traveled abroad
for more than 24 hours. Tourism is the act of paying money to go from one

place to another to see different and unique sights, has been a fact of civilized life since approximately the 12th century. Of course, back in those
days it was basically the upper class that had the time, the money, and the
interest in travelling from one spot to another.

The word "travel" by the way comes from the medieval English word

"travail" which means suffering great hardship, and that is a very good description of travel in its earliest days. Much has been written about the
journeys of Marco Polo, who until recently was considered the world's first
tourist.

The advent of air travel in the 1930's heralded the true beginnings of

what is called "tourism" today. People move from all around the country,
whether by plane, boat, car, bus or train. Today's Travel for the Masses Data from the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) suggests that at
any given moment of any given day, more than 2 million people around the
world are in the process of traveling from one place to another. The world
tourism organization claims that tourism is currently the world`s largest industry. With annual revenues of almost 3 trillion, its economic impact is
second to that of only the weapons industry.
