decrease in T4 concentration. Unlike males decrease of T4 concentration
was accompanied by 14% reduction of T3 and 17% reduction of fT3 serum
levels.
After 10 weeks of exposure of male rats to DDT a statistically
significant 12%, 13%, and 14% decrease of serum T3, fT3 and %fT3 levels
compared to the control was observed, respectively. Reduction of
thyroglobulin serum content by 11% as compared to the previous period
and by 14% to the control group was also revealed. Quantification of
serum concentration of T3 in female rats showed a 28% and 7% decrease
compared to 6 weeks levels and to the control levels, respectively. fT3
concentrations also reduced by 21% and 28% compared to previous
experimental and control levels. Concentration of serum thyroglobulin
decreased by 8% as compared to both the control group and the 6 weeks
period experimental group.
The only difference in control female and male thyroid status observed
was higher serum concentration of T3 and fT3 after 6 week period and T3
after 10 week period in female rats. The study revealed that prolonged
exposure to low doses of DDT affected the rat thyroid status. After 6
weeks, there was a reduction in the concentration of T4 in serum rats
of both sexes, but in females there was a decrease of T3 levels in
systemic circulation. After 10 weeks of the experiment, the levels of
T4 were upregulated in the males, while in females we found a tendency
to fT4 and T4 reduction. T3 lower concentrations resulted in increase
of the percentage of fT3 compared to the control rats.
Thus, a long-term exposure to low doses of DDT changes the thyroid
status of male and female rats and reduces the conversion of T4 to the
most active form of thyroid hormone –
T3, as well as decreases

thyroglobulin synthesis and, consequently, the production of T4.
Distinction of male and female thyroid status after exposure to low
doses of DDT was faster developing decrease in the serum concentration
of thyroglobulin and T4 in females.
